Tree and Leaves

Posted by ehass on September 28, 2007

Describing a system by writing User Stories is like sketching a tree by drawing the leaves first. UCD sketches the tree by first drawing it in broad strokes, and providing a vision of where the leaves will eventually fit.

This is very insightful – and in the design field this is seen all the time – you can always get a good read of one’s visual design skills by how they initially approach a drawing or composition. The “Tree” is always the way to go unless you want to be surprised how it’s going to turn out or be unsure it will even fit on the canvas. One has to pull out a lot of tricks to compensate for a “Leaf” approach.

I think there’s something between BDUF and TDUF (what this author suggests). He’s completely discounted the value of modeling or “prototyping’
